When the body system is exposed to harmful stimuli including irritants, damaged cells, or pathogens, it initiates a biological process of self-protection. This process, also known as inflammation, is one of the key mechanisms the body uses to heal itself. However, inflammation may at times become chronic in which case the immune system attacks the normal cells turning an ordinary healing process into a destructive pathway.
While it’s understood that the body may naturally cause chronic inflammation, research has indicated that there are certain foods that cause inflammation when consumed. The discussion below digs deep into some of these foods.
1.High Fructose Corn Syrup
Many processed foods use high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) as a sweetener. Compared to table sugar also known as sucrose, HFCS contains 55% fructose and 45% glucose. In a study done on mice where they were fed with diets high in fructose, they developed breast cancer which then spread to their lungs due to the onset of an inflammatory response to sugar.
In a randomized clinical trial, the participants were assigned regular soda, milk, diet soda, or water. It was found that the people who consumed regular soda had increased levels of uric acid which causes insulin resistance and inflammation. In a separate research, fructose when present in excess quantities in the body can cause inflammation within the cells that line the blood vessels known as endothelial cells.
2.Vegetable and Seed Oils
Vegetable oils have been praised as among the healthy oils in the league of coconut oil and virgin olive oil. What many people do not know is that vegetable and seed oils are extracted using solvents such as hexane which is a component of gasoline. Because of the polyunsaturated fatty acids structure in vegetable and seed oil, they are prone to oxidation which ultimately releases free radicals that induce inflammation. Also, the highly processed nature of these oils makes them have high levels of omega 6 fats which promote inflammation. Though omega 6 is important, it must be consumed in such a manner as to strike a healthy balance between omega 3 and omega 6.
